Hooters Cup Race Report: Alan Kulwicki Memorial 207
9 September 1997
Milwaukee, WI - 1995 United Speed Alliance Racing Hooters Cup Champion Mario Gosselin piloted his Jackaroo Barby Sauce Chevrolet to victory in the Alan Kulwicki Memorial 207 at the fabled Milwaukee Mile. Mario made good use of pit stops and tire strategy to collect the win worth $12.000. On the last pit stop on lap 125, Gosselin put on a set of "scuffs", tires that had about 15 laps on them, and then took the lead and was never seriously challenged as he cruised to the checkered flag."Our last pit stop we put on a set of tires that had about 15 laps on them," Gosselin said afterwards. "From that point on the car was on a rail. I could go inside or outside. In turn four I could put the right side on the yellow line, and I suspect no one else could do that. Bobby Gill had me concerned. But he was too tight, especially off turn two. My crew had me right in the thick of things and fortunately we were able to stay out front."
Gosselin's margin of victory was .094 seconds over the Terminal Trucking Chevrolet of Bobby Gill. Gill led the race for 23 laps until making a pit stop. Finishing in third was series points leader Freddie Query who led the most laps during the race, 106. Query also won the Royal Purple Lubricants Halfway Challenge for holding the lead at the midway point.
1996 Hooters Cup Champion Billy Bigley Jr came home in fourth spot with Ronnie Sanders finishing in fifth. Scott Wimmer was the top rookie finisher in the 207 lap grind while Mike Garvey took the Hard Charger award for gaining the most positions.
