AAA Joins CFWC In Restoring a 90 Year Tradition
Mission Bell Trail Markers on El Camino Real
WHAT: Mission Bell Historic Trail Marker unveiling ceremony in Santa
Clara.
WHY: Last year, the California Federated Women's Clubs (CFWC), the
California State Automobile Association (CSAA) and Auto Club of Southern
California (ACSC) began a two year project to restore, replace or purchase new
Mission Bell Historic Trail Markers along El Camino Real throughout the State
of California.
In 1906, the CFWC established the first bell trail marker project placing
the bells along El Camino Real to mark the way. In 1921, the AAA clubs in
California took responsibility for maintenance on the bell trail markers until
1933 when it reverted back to the State of California.
El Camino Real, established by Friar Junipero Serra in the late 1700's,
was the original route connecting the missions. Today the 700 mile road
varies little from its original path.
Conclusion of the project will occur in the year 2000 in time for the
festive California Sesquicentennial (150 year) statehood celebration.
