On the Prowl: New, Innovative Plymouth Roadster Arrives in Washington, D.C.-Area Dealerships
WASHINGTON, Oct. 30 -- The exciting, new 1998 Plymouth
Prowler arrived in Washington, D.C.-area Chrysler-Plymouth Dealerships today
during ceremonies at The Car Pool in Arlington, Virginia.
The only purple two-seat roadster in town, the Prowler pays homage to the
uniquely American hot rod culture -- it's the ultimate expression of the great
American open roadster. Yet it has all the 1990's technology, safety and
convenience of a production vehicle.
Baltimore and Washington, D.C. Chrysler/Plymouth Dealerships will receive
13 of about 700 Prowlers that will be produced this year. Production is
expected to expand next year. Area dealers received a Prowler based on
customer satisfaction ratings and 1996 retail sales.
"The new Plymouth Prowler is pure excitement," said Chrysler
Washington/Baltimore Zone Manager Bill Moore. "We expect its arrival in
dealer showrooms to generate enthusiasm around the Plymouth brand and once
again prove that Chrysler is a company willing to break with convention."
While Prowler's hot rod design and sleek styling turns heads, there's much
more to the car than meets the eye. Prowler is a rolling testbed for new
technology, including:
-- Its decklid, doors and hood side panels are stamped from aluminum
alloy. Total vehicle weight is between 2,800-2,850 lbs., with
aluminum accounting for approximately 900 lbs.
-- A 3.5-liter, 24-valve SOHC V-6 engine with AutoStick(R) system which
allows the four-speed gearbox to be fully automatic or manual mode
with the flick of a finger.
-- Front and rear tires featuring Goodyear's Extended Mobility technology
with run flat capability and a low tire pressure sensor to alert the
driver, allowing the vehicle to be driven for 50 miles at 55 mph after
a tire puncture.
-- Rear multi-link independent suspension using a lower control arm and a
three-bar-link upper configuration.
-- Front Suspension is a double wishbone design with upper and lower
control arms, and the front shock spring assemblies are aligned
similar to Indy cars, using a pushrod rocker.
The Prowler is produced at Chrysler Corporation's Conner Avenue Assembly
plant in Detroit, Michigan, where the Dodge Viper GTS Coupe and Viper RT/10
Roadster also are built.
