Ford Statement on United Nations Global Climate Treaty Negotiations
DEARBORN, Mich., Dec. 11 -- The following statement may be
attributed to Alex Trotman, chairman and chief executive officer, Ford Motor
Company :
At Ford Motor Company our work on advanced breakthrough technologies for
our customers started long before Kyoto, and we will continue those efforts.
As for what has come out of Kyoto's confusing process, it is not a
constructive result for the world economy or efforts to preserve the
environment. We said throughout the debate that we were opposed to legally-
binding targets and to unbalanced participation among nations. Since the
protocol has targets for developed nations but no commitments from developing
nations, it won't work. The protocol will impose significant costs on the
United States and other developed economies, without achieving genuine
environmental benefit.
As we always have emphasized, Ford's work on reliable, affordable, energy-
efficient products and technologies will continue. We will participate
actively in the search for cost-effective improvements that serve our
customers and also protect our environment.
