Statement on Global Warming Treaty Robert R. Miller, President, Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association
WASHINGTON, Dec. 11 -- The following is a statement on Global
Warming Treaty by Robert R. Miller, President, Motor & Equipment Manufacturers
Association:
"The Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA) and its members
recognize, and are responding proactively to, the many serious environmental
challenges which our industry and society as a whole face on local, national,
and international levels. For this reason, we have closely monitored the
United Nations negotiations on global climate change in Kyoto, Japan during
the past week.
"MEMA is greatly disappointed that the Administration was unable to obtain
a commitment from major emerging economies to participate in this proposed
treaty. We believe the agreement, if ratified and implemented, could
seriously harm economic prospects in the United States and in the motor
vehicle and equipment industry in particular.
"MEMA will carefully review the details of the complete agreement once
they become public. We also will participate actively next year in what we
anticipate will be a very critical congressional review of its provisions and
their implications for key U.S. industries and jobs."
