American Honda August Sales Second Best Ever; Honda Division Sets All-Time Record
TORRANCE, Calif., Sept. 1 -- American Honda recorded its
second-best month ever with sales of 97,441 in August, but low inventories
held sales 3.2 percent short of last year's all-time record month, according
to sales figures released today by American Honda Motor Co., Inc.
It was the first time in 1998 American Honda monthly sales failed to top
year-ago levels. Year-to-date American Honda sales of 678,066 are running 7.4
percent ahead of 1997's all-time record pace.
Honda Division sales of 87,669 set a new all-time record. Best-ever light
truck and CR-V sales, and a record August for Passport, offset a drop in
Accord sales caused by low inventories. Honda dealers began the month with
less than a 15-day supply of new Accords. Acura sales were also down for the
month as a result of low inventories.
The inventory situation began to improve in late August and will continue
to improve in September as 1999 models arrive in dealerships. Shipments have
begun of the 1999 Accord and the all-new 1999 Acura 3.2TL.
The new U.S.-built Acura 3.2TL offers class-leading value with an
unprecedented list of standard luxury features including a 3.2-liter, 225
horsepower VTEC V-6, Sequential SportShift four-speed automatic transmission,
leather interior and much more. The price for the fully equipped 3.2TL is
$27,950. The only factory-installed option available is the Acura Navigation
System, which brings the new 3.2TL's MSRP to $29,950.
