Southern California Gas Price Average Drops a Penny Since December Survey
LOS ANGELES--Jan. 19, 1999--The average price of regular self-serve unleaded gasoline in Southern California inched downward from $1.208 to $1.192, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California Fuel Gauge Report. This compares with a state average of $1.184 and a national average of 97.9 cents per gallon. The national average is the lowest since 1979.
In Southern California, the most significant decline occurred in San Diego County, where gas prices fell between 3 cents and 5 cents per gallon. The smallest declines occurred in Los Angeles, where most prices dipped less than a penny.
Industry experts say that the price reductions are a result of continuing oversupply of crude oil and refined products, and overall milder winter temperatures which have cut demand for heating oil in the East. Demand is expected to hit seasonal lows in February and March. Gas prices may increase slightly after March when supply and demand begin to even out.
Southern California gas prices tend to be higher than the national average due to higher state gas taxes, higher cost of refining the cleaner burning fuel required in the state and a robust economy.
