Southern California Gas Prices Move Downward, While National Average Increases
LOS ANGELES--Sept. 21, 1999--The average price of a gallon of regular self-serve unleaded gasoline in Southern California gave up nearly half of its Labor Day increase by dropping nearly 6 cents during the past month, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California Fuel Gauge Report. The September average price is $1.456, which compares with $1.514 on Aug. 24.
The Southern California average price compares with a September statewide average of $1.487. The July national average is $1.282 per gallon -- up 2.7 cents compared with August.
Travelers to Northern California can expect to pay an average $1.56 for regular, down nearly 9 cents from last month. San Francisco is higher at an average $1.64 per gallon for regular.
Prices in California have dropped due to decreasing demand following the summer travel season, according to industry analysts. Some analysts expect that continued production decreases by OPEC countries may cause prices in California to continue fluctuating. The price of a barrel of crude oil closed Monday at $24.28, compared with a low of $10.73 reached in December 1998.
