135 New Car Models to Get Lower Rates From State Farm, 109 in Line for Higher Rates
BLOOMINGTON, Ill., Nov. 29 -- One hundred thirty-five models
of year 2000 vehicles have qualified for lower-than-standard auto insurance
rates from State Farm because they generate lower-than-average claim payments
for damage and theft.
One hundred nine 2000 models will be charged above-standard rates because
their damage and theft claim payments are higher-than-average.
The other 79 year 2000 models will be charged standard rates. Standard
rates for all models are based on the manufacturer's suggested retail price of
the vehicle.
Under a rating plan on file with insurance departments in most states,
State Farm uses its actual claim payments for vehicle damage and theft on
similar models for prior years to determine which 2000 models will qualify for
lower- or higher-than-standard premiums for collision and comprehensive
coverages.
Models that qualify for lower rates generally are charged from 10 to 45
percent less than the standard collision and comprehensive premiums for
vehicles in their price range. Owners of models getting higher rates
generally pay from 10 to 45 percent more than the standard collision and
comprehensive rates for vehicles in their price range.
Only the premiums for the two coverages that insure the vehicle against
damage and theft -- collision and comprehensive -- are affected by the
program.
Many pre-2000 model vehicles are also being charged rates below- or above-
standard under the program, which has been in effect since 1981.
The State Farm make and model rating system applies in all states except
Massachusetts, North Carolina and Texas, where similar state-mandated programs
are used. It also does not apply in the three Canadian provinces in which
State Farm sells auto insurance.
Following is a list of the 2000 models that qualify, in most states, for
below-standard premiums, a list of those assessed the standard premiums and a
list of those charged above-standard premiums for their price range.
