Michigan Road Builders Say Governor's Transportation Plan Is Good for Michigan Motorists
LANSING, Mich., Jan. 20 -- Members of the Michigan Road
Builders Association (MRBA) say the state's ambitious road improvement plan
could get better if the state legislature approves Gov. John Engler's new
"Build Michigan III" initiative. Engler unveiled the proposal during
Wednesday's State of the State address.
"Hearing the governor continue his long-standing commitment to improving
Michigan's roads, highways and bridges is great news for Michigan motorists,"
said Tony Milo, executive vice president of the Michigan Road Builders
Association. "Michigan drivers have seen the benefit of increased
transportation funding over the past couple of years. With enactment of this
new proposal, the benefits will be even greater."
In the next five years, "Build Michigan III" will dedicate $1 billion to
fixing Michigan roads in addition to the nearly $12 billion that will be
invested in road repairs by the Michigan Department of Transportation, county
road commissions and cities/villages. The "Build Michigan III" plan will
focus on additional improvements needed to relieve congestion, reduce delays,
improve driver safety and sustain the state's economic expansion.
MRBA members will be reviewing the details of the plan and working with
the legislature to enact it.
"We are optimistic legislators will find this plan worthwhile," Milo said.
"The governor's Build Michigan plans have made travel for Michigan motorists
easier, faster and safer than any other time in Michigan history."
