Nissan Announces Recall of 1995 and 1996 Sentras

    GARDENA, Calif., April 20 Today Nissan announced a safety
recall on approximately 14,500 1995 and 1996 model year Nissan Sentra vehicles
manufactured from May through November, 1995.
    On some Sentra vehicles manufactured during this time period that are
operated in areas of the country where significant amounts of salt are used on
the road in the winter, there is a possibility that a front coil spring may
break as a result of corrosion due to salt.  A broken spring could puncture a
tire and result in loss of control of the vehicle, which could cause a crash.

    States which use a significant amount of salt include:

    Connecticut    Iowa        Massachusetts    New Jersey     Vermont
    Delaware       Kansas      Michigan         New York       Virginia
    District
     of Columbia   Kentucky    Minnesota        Ohio           West Virginia
    Illinois       Maine       Missouri         Pennsylvania   Wisconsin
    Indiana        Maryland    New Hampshire    Rhode Island

    In order to prevent this incident from occurring, customers who purchased
and/or have their vehicle registered in one of the states above will be sent
notification letters beginning April 24, 2000, requesting them to contact a
Nissan dealership to replace the two front coil springs with an improved type.
The free repair service will take approximately two hours, but the dealer may
require the vehicle for a longer period of time based upon their work
schedule.
    Customers in non-salt states will be sent notification letters beginning
approximately May 22, 2000 advising them of the situation and stating that
their vehicle does not have to be repaired, unless the owner has driven the
car for a significant period of time in one of the states listed above where
it was exposed to road salt in the winter or they are not sure.  If so, the
front coil sprints should be replaced.
    Nissan is committed to a high level of customer service and is working
with its dealers to address this condition for our Sentra customers.
