AAA Statement on Record Fuel Prices in Midwest

    HEATHROW, Fla. - The following was released today by AAA:

    "Representatives of the US Environmental Protection Agency and the US
Energy Department will be visiting with energy companies from the Midwest next
week to explore the causes of record-high fuel prices.  AAA supports these
meetings and believes the rapid and steep run-up in prices in both Chicago and
Milwaukee are of particular concern.

    "With the cost of gasoline approaching or exceeding $2 per gallon in some
areas, motorists need to be assured these high prices are not the result of
misguided federal regulations, or energy industry manipulation.  AAA looks
forward to a clear and convincing explanation from federal authorities about
the causes behind the upward spiral in fuel prices."
