NEW YORK, Oct. 3 You drive a car, but what makes it run?
You eat the food, but how is it grown? You ride in the plane, but how is it
assembled? MODERN MARVELS: MEN AT WORK WEEK profiles the people, tools and
technology behind many of the products, goods and services we take for
granted. The four-episode annual theme week airs Monday October 16 at 9 pm
ET/PT; Tuesday-Thursday, October 17-19 at 10 pm ET/PT. Each program is a World
Premiere. The series repeats Saturday, October 21, from 3 pm-8 pm ET/PT.
The History Channel's 2nd annual MODERN MARVELS: MEN AT WORK WEEK kicks
off with a two-hour world premiere special, THE BODY SHOP. Hosted by Ron
Hazelton, handyman expert from Good Morning America, THE BODY SHOP literally
dismantles a new car to explain how all of those components under the hood
make your car run safely and smoothly.
Later in the week, discover how modern machine tools have revolutionized
the production process. Uncover how technological breakthroughs in farming
equipment and techniques deliver the food you eat from seed to shelf, and
examine the nearly century-old evolution of the assembly line, its effect on
output, and the benefits and hazards that its workers face.
Whether you're a do-it-yourselfer or hate to get your fingernails dirty,
MODERN MARVELS: MEN AT WORK WEEK demonstrates the intricate and fascinating
ways that hard work yields quality and quantity.
World premiere episodes include:
-- October 16: THE BODY SHOP (9pm ET/PT)
In this two hour Men at Work Week kick-off, go under the hood to
understand what makes engines rev, spark plugs fire and pistons churn.
During the program, host Ron Hazelton and two certified mechanics will
dismantle a 2000 Ford Taurus piece by piece, as viewers learn the
history behind the components that make cars function. We will examine
how these parts have evolved from the 1800s to the present, and the
newer, stronger and safer technology being used in car designs.
-- October 17: MACHINE TOOLS (10pm ET/PT)
Handmade may be preferred when it comes to furniture or jewelry, but
not when it comes to planes, trains or automobiles. Machine tools have
built our modern world. From steam engines to modern-day "machining
centers" that produce the complex parts for the Space Shuttle, a look
at how basic machine tools developed, and the technological advances
that will change how products are made in the future.
-- October 18: FARMING TECHNOLOGY (10pm ET/PT)
The evolution of the tools used in the industry that feeds the world.
The agricultural process has changed drastically over the years, using
ever more sophisticated and often controversial techniques to gain
higher yields. From family farms to bio-tech, meet the farmers and the
scientists who are reaping more from the earth.
-- October 19: ASSEMBLY LINE (10pm ET/PT)
According to Encyclopedia Britannica, an assembly line is an
"industrial arrangement of machines, equipment, and workers for
continuous flow of workpieces in mass production operations." While the
basic principles of the assembly line technique have not changed in one
hundred years, the people and the products that exploit the technique
have. This program will focus primarily on the industries responsible
for it's development as well as significant inventions and world events
influential to its growth.
